North East Directors

We’re accepting submissions for Haddaway & Write 2026!

This opportunity is for two theatre directors from the North East of England.

They will each direct three short plays for Haddaway & Write, our flagship talent development project that will result in a regional touring production of six short plays to community and arts venues in May 2026.

In partnership with Gala Durham and funded by Arts Council England, Haddaway & Write champions talent from the region and improves access to theatre for local audiences and artists.

We actively encourage applications from traditionally excluded and marginalised backgrounds.

Applicants must be:

  • Aged 18+ and based in the North East of England (County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley)
  • Confident directing professional actors
  • Confident working within a larger creative team
  • Passionate about amplifying North East voices 
  • Available for the below dates

Dates:

  • Full-team read through: 2nd April 2026
  • Rehearsal week 1: 27/04/26 – 02/05/26
  • Rehearsal week 2: 05/05/26 – 09/05/26
  • Rehearsal week 3: 11/05/26 – 16/05/26

Fees:

  • Readthrough date: £150/day + Holiday Pay
  • Rehearsal weeks: £601/week +  Holiday Pay
  • Preparatory fee: £1326.25

Submission Deadline: 12pm Wednesday 25th February 2026

Shortlisted directors will be invited to attend an online interview on the 2nd/3rd March.

North East Actors

We are casting actors based in the North East of England for our regional tour of Haddaway & Write 2026!

We are casting 8 actors to take part in a read-through, three weeks of rehearsals and two weeks of touring in April-May 2026.

Haddaway & Write is a collection of 6 short North East plays which will tour to community and theatre venues in the region, in partnership with Gala Durham.

We actively encourage applications from traditionally excluded and marginalised backgrounds.

Roles:

  • Various female characters with playing ages early 20s, 20s – 40s and 50+

  • Various male characters with playing ages late 20s-30s, early-late 40s and 50+

Applicants must be:

  • Aged 18+
  • Available for the below dates
  • Based in the North East of England (County Durham, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley)

Dates:

  • Auditions: 17th-18th March
  • Read through: Thursday 2nd April 2026
  • Rehearsals: 27th April – 19th May – actors won’t be required for every rehearsal day
  • Tour Dates: 20th – 30th May

Fees:

  • Read-through & Rehearsals: Actors will be paid a day rate of £150 + holiday pay or a weekly rate of £631 + holiday pay where required for 4 or more days per week, according to the number of dates they will be required within the rehearsal schedule.
  • Performance weeks: £631/week + holiday pay

What we’re looking for:

You will be required to include a link to a recent self tape, scene or showreel that best demonstrates your performance of a character-driven scene or monologue.

We’re looking for a naturalistic performance in your own accent. We’re more interested in your talent than what’s on your CV.
